Electricity A Positive and Negative force

Did you ever wonder how many things in the world are good and bad at the same time?  Flowers, can be beautiful, fragrant, or uplifting the spirits, can also produce deadly toxins or lifesaving medications. Cars protect and take us to our destinations however, in certain circumstances, such as speeding or in inclement weather can kill us. Electricity can kill with high voltage by unprotected wires. It can also save lives with voltage through an AED (automated external defibrillator).

Many things are good and bad for us. AEDs have to be one of the most successful devices ever invented. They can bring us back from death if used quickly after a cardiac arrest. Time is a big factor in our survival. Not all defibrillations are successful and I attibute that to the individual’s previous health status. A failing heart might not be able to be “ jump started” but an irregular beat or a temporary cessation might be reactivated!

Our bodies also run on electrical charges. They tell our heart, which is divided into four chambers, when to beat. This is the positive force working for us. Damaged hearts could run down like a battery and fail to recharge.

Your body is a unique entity. It works with checks and balances , a pump, and a central nervous system. Take care of it and it will take care of you!

Remember Frankie? Now He is a Hero!

Remember the movie Frankenstein? How he was brought to life by electricity? Well the past theory is now proven fact. The movie did have flaws but you get the picture. A cardiac arrest victim can be revived by an electrical shock  if it is done quicky after an arrest and if medically the patient’s heart co-operates. Not all defibrillations are successful but more are than not.

Fifty years ago defibrillation was introduced in hospitals and doctors offices. As time went by Paramedics and EMTs were allowed to perform defibrillation with automated external defibrillators(AEDs). Now defibrillators are in homes for the possiblity of cardiac events occurring. Trained rescuers and samaritans may provide defibrillation in emergencies. Technology has come a long way. Hands on Cardiopulmpnary Resuscitation (CPR) can be taught by the defibrillator with audio instructions ( and most of them do have it). Fear is taken away by the calm voice talking you through the steps of CPR and defibrillation. Amazing how advanced we have become and how an idea from the past has become a reality.

Defibtech, a company based in Guilford, Connecticut donated one of its Lifeline AEDs (automated external defibrillators) to the town’s fire department. This generosity of giving a gift which keeps on giving will be appreciated by the community.

The Vice President of Defibtech sales stated that the Defibtech is easy to use, durable, and waterproof. 400,000

people each year have a SCA(Sudden Cardiac Arrest) and a defibrillator increases their chance of survival by 10%.

The Defibtech company is to be commended on its service to

all. Their yellow and black defibrillator stands out from the rest.

Maintenance Protocol Cancelled

On Nov.18th 2009 Assistant Chief of EMS, John McFarland cancelled the maintenance program for AEDs in FDNY and ordered coordinators to keep all expired LP12s (LifePack 12 defibrillators) in service.

Many EMTs are concerned about the patient lives at risk by getting a malfunctioning defibrillator. The union also expressed concern of a possible critical failure as the overhaul time lengthens. They also worry about the diagnostics being accurate and trustworthy. In Oct. 2009 a Staten Island ambulance was out of service for 4 hours while waiting for a replacement defibrillator fronm Brooklyn.

These defibrillators cost $25,000 each and not to follow maintenance protocol seems foolish and dangerous for the unlucky victim who gets a malfunctioing defibrillator.

I think the cost of the defibrillator, maintenance schedule, and features could have been more carefully screened before this white elephant ( or should I say- cash cow) began to drain the budget. This is your tax dollar at work? Who is their adviser? The national mint?  Who did the planning on this?

Life Saving Investment

What is a life saving investment? Money in an annuity? Maybe, but be prepared for gain and loss in the stock markets. My idea of a life saving investment is a defibrillator. If a loved one has a heart condition it only stands to reason that a specialized medical device be on hand to reverse a cardiac arrest and save a life.

Many people with heart problems feel that what will be will be. Is that true? It doesn’t have to be. Cars come with seat belts. Not everyone uses them. Those that do have protection. Those that don’t are playing Russian Roulette with their lives. What kind of person are you? Safe or sorry?

Now defibrillators are so easy to use by the lay person. The device practically does everything for you. It verbally instructs you and only shocks if necessary. If you get stressed and try to shock the victim by acident it refuses to do it. The voice you hear is calming and soothing to your nerves aiding you in this stressful moment. The instructions are clear and concise. The buttons precisely marked.

Automated external defibrillators are necessities for heart patients. Don’t you want to be prepared and show how much you care for your loved one’s safety? Again the choice is yours.

Clay County Cops get Defibrillators

Clay County received a $16,000 grant from the Dakota Medical Foundation to provide the patrol division with 7 new Philips Heartstart  automated external defibrillators.

Their deputies have been given a refresher course in CPR and training on the defibrillators. As a first responder their task will certainly be made easier to attempt to resuscitate a victim of a cardiac event and know that his/her chances of survival are greatly increased by not having to wait for EMTs.

I think the people in this county can feel safer knowing that their lives are in good hands.

Zoll Medical Corp donated a defibrillator to the Smith Junior High School in Mesa, Arizona. The staff and students were given training in CPR and on the Automated External Defibrillator in order to train family members in the event of a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).

Three other schools also receiving defibrillators are participating in the Department of Health Services,”Your Hands-Their Heart” program. The goal is proper performance of the proceedures and extending safety knowledge to others. The ripple effect should achieve basic lifesaving techniques in a large numer of potential first responders.

The Zoll Corporation is to be commended on its generosity and civic integrity.

Defibtech History

Defibtech was founded by Dr. Laub and a fellow Yale graduate, President Gintaras Vaisnys in 2002 with seed money from private investors. Their corporate structure merges innovation with efficiency.

When Defibtech was introduced it revolutionized the AED marketplace. The device had many features better than other AEDs and sold for half the cost. At that time AEDs were selling for $3,000-$4,000 and Defibtech was selling for $1,500.

They market their product through distribution partners and have reached Number 1 ranking in the Connecticut Technology Fast 50.To become elegible for that honor they had to qualify with an operating  revenue of $50,000 in 2002 and $5,000,000 in 2006.Their headquarters had to be located in North America and be a company that owned propietary technology or intellectual property that contributed significantly to the companies’ revenues or spent a large portion of revenues on research and technology.

Their mission is to make the best Automated external defibrillators in the world at affordable prices.

To advance that fast in so little time I’d say they’re amazing.Wouldn’t you?

Hail to The Conquering Heroes!

Today I want to pay homage to those special rescuers of sudden cardiac arrest(SCA) victims. You came upon frightening situations, pushed past your fear, and aided a stranger, friend or family member with life saving proceedures of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and/or cardiac defibrillation. Even if your attempt failed it was not your fault. You did what another could not. YOU TRIED! God bless you for that.

Not everyone can be a hero. Some of us become frozen when faced with such a scary situation and regret and guilt will always be with us for what might have been a different conclusion. Were we cowards? Maybe and maybe not. Maybe it was meant to be. Only God knows and only He should judge us.

This is for those who stepped up in time of need. The unsung heroes who tried to make a difference to our fellow man, woman, or child. God Bless you. Your treasure is in heaven and it will be overwhelming.
