More and more stories are published in the news regarding the importance of defibrillators in saving lives. Nurses get Cardio-Pulmonary Respiration training (CPR) along with Defibrillator training yearly to keep their skills up and react quickly to sudden cardiac events.
Defibrillators have become more and more common in businesses, schools, and homes. Public and personal safety is now a priority in a “personal” way. Look around you for the AED sign or AED cabinet. Check with your gym, library, bank, hotel, or other public gathering places to see if they have your safety as a #1 priority. If the don’t have the equipment, suggest that getting it would inspire confidence in their business.
I have every confidence in my physical therapy department. They display their device on the wall with a very prominent AED sign in their waiting room. Other businesses who employ a large amount of personnel or do business with the public would do well to follow their example. Sudden cardiac arrest can occur at any time in any age group. Saving a life is the most important thing anyone can accomplish in a lifetime.
Defibrillators give us a second chance at life and save lives. They are so easy to use. Push the power button and follow directions.
Zoll Corporation has landed a major contract from the United Kingdom. It has been picked as the supplier of automated external defibrillators for BHF ( the British Heart Foundation).
Zoll has now become a leader in the international market for medical devices. The UK has over 200,000 deaths per year due to SCA (Sudden Cardiac Arrest). Early defibrillation increases reversal by 50%. Zoll is expected to really make a difference to British subjects.
Zoll’s growth is due to their innovation of many various products and superior technology. Their competition is Cardiac Science Corporation, HeartSine Technologies, and Defibtech.
They have an M Series,E Series, R Series, Zoll Plus, Zoll Pro and the latest is the Lifevest Wearable Defibrillator.
As we get older and more infirm and fragile we should consider what to do with an implantable defibrillator. If your heart rate slows you will get a shock to raise it. If you or a loved one is dying this can be counter productive to the natural process of dying. I know most of us don’t want to die but lets face it death is our ultimate end until we pass on to another dimension. ( Yes, I believe in heaven and hell).
If you have a loved one who wishes to be not resuscitated in the event of a catastrophic situation that cannot be reversed then consider removing the device. Talk it over with your family or loved one so everyone understands the plan. Also speak with your doctor and remind him that the defibrillator is functioning. If you don’t then it will keep discharging and trying to reverse the heart rate to a normal rhythm.
Sometimes this issue gets overlooked and it is very important to you and a family member if this situation occurs. I suggest this as an extreme measure when all options are gone.
I am really proud of this article. A neighboring town from me received a $12,500 donation from grateful business owners. It seems their business caught fire and had been heavily damaged. The Co-owners raised money for the police and fire department for saving their building.
The money was used to provide the police with eight defibrillators. Seven went to the town cruisers and one to the station. They have had them for 2 years. On May 24th, Officer Nathan Fiske Sr. heard a call on his scanner about a 78 year old woman who was unresponsive in a medical building at 112 Main St.
He responded with his defibrillator. Chest compressions were not successful so he proceeded to shock the victim to restore a heart rhythm. Chest comressions resumed and the fire department arrived to take over.
The victim started to respond and success was imminent.God Bless those who aid us in catastrophic times.I applaud the town for its foresight in equipping their first responders with advanced technologyof cardiac defibrilllators. Go Northboro!!!

How can an intelligent person not vote for the children and adults’ safety?Defibrillators are the #1 choice in a Sudden Cardiac Event (SCA). Schools are the most important areas to have a defibrillator in case of a sudden cardiac arrest. They work on infants/children and adults.
Tthe Butler Elementary School District Board considered buying a defibrillator for the district. The president stated it would not be for the kids but for the staff in case of a cardiac emergency.( Was he stating children would not be able to receive a shock, unable to operate it, or only staff would use it on adults?) I’m not quite clear on that.
They voted to spend the $3000 they had on training teachers to give CPR(Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) to victims in a catastrophic events. Nice choice but the defibrillator could teach you CPR and the defibrillator is the first choice in restarting a heart.
Sorry people I think you made a wrong choice.
The Casa Linda Elementary school opted to purchase a defibrillator. They never thought they would use it as quickly as they did on Emiliano Vela. Emiliano is a 6 year old who experienced a sudden cardiac arrest while in school.
Staff members rushed to his aid with the defibrillator and initiated a shock. They proceeded to give him CPR and brought his heart back to a normal rhythm. They concur that the benefit of a defibrillator out weighs the cost involved.
Emiliano would be gone instead of being a miracle to his family and classmates. The school deserves recognition for its positive action in prevention of sudden cardiac arrest. Their defibrillator DID give someone a second chance at life and Emiliano’s responder told of how easy the process was with oral prompts helping her.
The Pequannock Rotary Club presented Police Chief Tom Andrascik a defibrillator to help the community in sudden cardiac arrest events. They sponsor the Save-A-Life program which subsidizes money to purchase life saving equipment or othe needs of the community. The Lincoln Park Police Department reached out for assistance in purchasing a defibrillator to aid in public safety. The Rotary Club donated $1000 to them and the PD raised another $600 to purchase it. This partnership is a beautiful cooperation of 2 organizations blending to achieve a worth while goal together for their community.
The defibrillator is a major factor in saving lives for those in cardiac arrest. Some people get to have a second chance to reevaluate their goals in life.
ICDs or implanted cardio-verter defibrillators are battery operated electrical impulse generator devices placed under the skin in patients at risk for a cardiac arrest. The devices are programmed to reverse atrial or ventricular tachycardia (irregular fast heartbeats caused by the venticles or atrium),performs biventricular pacing in patients with congestive heart failure, and bradycardia( slow heart beats).
The ICDs monitor the rhythm and rate of the heart and corrects it with a slight shock if necessary. It was developed in 1980 by a 3 man team. Michael Mirowski,Morton Mower, and William Staewen at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. In 1985 the Icd was considered the prophylactic therapy for those at risk for a cardiac event.
Patients with them may do their normal activities with a slight adjustment for taking care not to be too vigorous with their arm or shoulder.Cell phones should be kept 6″ away from the implant site of an ICD.
Elderly patients who are DNR (do no resuscitate)candidates can get their ICDs turned off to give them a peaceful passing. Monitoring the ICD would be done periodically to assess the function of the device.
Today I want to pay homage to those special rescuers of sudden cardiac arrest(SCA) victims. You came upon frightening situations, pushed past your fear, and aided a stranger, friend or family member with life saving proceedures of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and/or cardiac defibrillation. Even if your attempt failed it was not your fault. You did what another could not. YOU TRIED! God bless you for that.
Not everyone can be a hero. Some of us become frozen when faced with such a scary situation and regret and guilt will always be with us for what might have been a different conclusion. Were we cowards? Maybe and maybe not. Maybe it was meant to be. Only God knows and only He should judge us.
This is for those who stepped up in time of need. The unsung heroes who tried to make a difference to our fellow man, woman, or child. God Bless you. Your treasure is in heaven and it will be overwhelming.
