School District Votes for CPR over Defibrillator

How can an intelligent person not vote for the children and adults’ safety?Defibrillators are the #1 choice in a Sudden Cardiac Event (SCA). Schools are the most important areas to have a defibrillator in case of a sudden cardiac arrest. They work on infants/children and adults.

Tthe Butler Elementary School  District  Board considered buying a defibrillator for the district. The president stated it would not be for the kids but for the staff in case of a cardiac emergency.( Was he stating children would not be able to receive a shock, unable to operate it, or only staff would use it on adults?) I’m not quite clear on that.

They voted to spend the $3000 they had on training teachers  to give CPR(Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) to victims in a catastrophic events. Nice choice but the defibrillator could teach you CPR  and the defibrillator is the first choice in restarting a heart.

Sorry people I think you made a wrong choice.

Casa Linda Elementary Uses Defibrillator

The Casa Linda Elementary school opted to purchase a defibrillator. They never thought they would use it as quickly as they did on Emiliano Vela. Emiliano is a 6 year old who experienced a sudden cardiac arrest while in school.

Staff members rushed to his aid with the defibrillator and initiated a shock. They proceeded to give him CPR and brought his heart back to a normal rhythm. They concur that the benefit of a defibrillator out weighs the cost involved.

Emiliano would be gone instead of being a miracle to his family and classmates. The school deserves recognition for its positive action in prevention of sudden cardiac arrest. Their defibrillator DID give someone a second chance at life and Emiliano’s responder told of how easy the process was with oral prompts helping her.

The Pequannock Rotary Club presented Police Chief Tom Andrascik a defibrillator to help the community in sudden cardiac arrest events. They sponsor the Save-A-Life program which subsidizes money  to purchase life saving equipment or othe needs of the community. The Lincoln Park Police Department reached out for assistance in purchasing a defibrillator to aid in public safety. The Rotary Club donated $1000 to them and the PD raised another $600 to purchase it. This partnership is a beautiful cooperation of 2 organizations blending to achieve a worth while goal together for their community.

The defibrillator is a major factor in saving lives for those in cardiac arrest. Some people get to have a second chance to reevaluate their goals in life.

Today we celebrate the resurection of the One who died and rose again..without a defibrillator I might add. Jesus our Lord and Saviour took all our sins away that we may have everlasting life.

Read the Truth, follow in His footsteps, and keep His Commandments. Easy? No Sir. Its impossible to do all that on our own but through Him who can do all things it is easy. Keep your focus on Jesus who loves us.

Happy Easter and God Bless you all!

What Does Security Cost ?

What does security cost? Do you feel safe knowing your genetic background holds heart problems? Your cholesterol is high, you’re overweight ,have high blood pressure,a smoker,a couch potato, diabetic,or prone to thrombophlebitis(inflammation of veins with clot formation).

You could arrest anywhere, anytime. What can you do? Your life is in your hands. Get that cholesterol, sugar, and blood pressure under control. Exercise a little. Elevate those legs, get help from ypur physician before you start to fall apart. Your family needs you. Prevention is what you owe yourself and them.

A defibrillator costs $2-3,000. It saves lives. It is more important than a car or a house. If you need one and can’t get one you might not need one anymore. Was it worth scimping on your life? Think about it.

Check out Philips Heartstart,Defibtech Lifeline,or ZollPro or Plus defibrillators for price, and suitability for you and your family. You will really feel secure that you are doing everything in your power to protect yourself. Its a wonderful relief to get rid of worry.

Hail to The Conquering Heroes!

Today I want to pay homage to those special rescuers of sudden cardiac arrest(SCA) victims. You came upon frightening situations, pushed past your fear, and aided a stranger, friend or family member with life saving proceedures of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and/or cardiac defibrillation. Even if your attempt failed it was not your fault. You did what another could not. YOU TRIED! God bless you for that.

Not everyone can be a hero. Some of us become frozen when faced with such a scary situation and regret and guilt will always be with us for what might have been a different conclusion. Were we cowards? Maybe and maybe not. Maybe it was meant to be. Only God knows and only He should judge us.

This is for those who stepped up in time of need. The unsung heroes who tried to make a difference to our fellow man, woman, or child. God Bless you. Your treasure is in heaven and it will be overwhelming.

Internal or external AEDs

I think automated external defibrillators  are pretty well covered so I want to tell an unusual story about an internal defibrillator. You probably know internal defibrillators are implanted into the chest and are connected by an electrical wire which is connected to the heart muscle. If the person has a slower than normal heart rate then the defibrillator gives a slight jolt to stimulate the heart to pick up the pace and increase the heartrate. If the person has other types of heart irregularities the shock can still be given to reset the rhythm automatically.

Bet you didn’t know that the defibrillator is placed under the skin and is elevated so that it looks like a circular raised mound around 2-3 inches in diameter. Very noticable.

My story is true and involves a 61 year old, an implanted defibrillator, and a bullet. Figured it out? A Florida man was saved by a defibrillator only he wasn’t an SCA (sudden cardiac arrest) victim.  He was shot in the chest and the bullet lodged in his “pocketwatch” device. I have no info on the who or why of this story. His organs( heart and lungs) were protected from major damage.

How’s that for getting your money’s worth? Or do you think his shooter was aiming at a bulls eye ? I’d say he had an angel on his shoulder wouldn’t you?

V-Tach

What is V-Tach? An arrhythmia called ventricular tachycardia, which starts in the ventricles of your heart. It causes an increased pulse rate of 100 beats per minute or more and is very dangerous is left untreated.

This condition can occur before or after a heart attack. It can occur in people with heart problems, such as heart valve disorders, myocarditis (inflamation of the heart muscle),heart failure, or heart surgery.

It can be caused by anti-arrhythmic medications, changes in blood chemistry (low potassium levels),changes in the acid-base balance,or lack of oxygen.

Symptoms are fainting, chest discomfort, dizziness, palpitations(sensation of feeling the heart beat), and shortness of breath. Symptoms may stop or start suddenly and in some cases there are no symptoms.

This is a major cause of cardiac death. Signs include: absent pulse, loss of consciousness, normal or low blood pressure, and rapid pulse.

Treatment is based on symptoms and type of heart disorder. Some people don’t require treatment. Those with emergency situations may require CPR(cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) or cardiac defibrillation to convert the irregular heart rhythm. A cardiac defibrillator will produce a shock to the victim to restart the heart and put it in normal sinus rhythm.

Anti- arrhythmic drugs can be prescribed for treatment long term, a proceedure called ablation can be performed to obliterate abnormal pathways in the heart which cause this, or an internal cardioverter/defibrillator can be implanted in the heart to give mild shocks automatically when V-tach occurs in order to stop it.

WHAT IS A HUMAN LIFE WORTH?

Thursday, March 4, 2010

What is a human life worth? Fifty year ago it was a $1.98.If you were reduced to all the components that make up a human that was what you were worth. Now I expect the earning power and life expectency would be figured into that equation and your worth would be much much greater.

How would you evaluate the feelings and emotions of those whose lives you touch? Not important you say? Don’t bet on it! A mother, father, sister, brother, friend or neighbor…all play important roles in our lives and are very valuable. Maybe a kind word or smile from a stranger will make your day. We never know.

We should always be prepared to help one another because we are all part of God’s family. If you find someone in a cardiac event situation learn what to do. Airway, Breathe, Compression are the ABC’s of CPR(Cardio Pulmonary Ressuscitation). Call 911 and start CPR. Defibrillation is next if you have one available. Yell for a defibrillator. The person you save could be the next great man in history or someone who is related to the next genious…you never know. If one of Einstein’s ancestors  had died in his direct line,  he wouldn’t have been here. So we are all important to each other. Be a neighbor.

Zoll AED Simulator/Tester or Zoll AED Plus Training Unit?

The Zoll AED Pro Simulator is an accessory for the Zoll AED Pro or Plus Defibrillator. It is used to test or train a person in how to use the defibrillator. It can be plugged in to either the Pro or Plus model.

The Zoll AED  Simulator/tester gives an ECG rhythm simulation,CPR simulation, and a Rhythm conversion after shock.

Zoll also offers a Zoll AED Plus Training unit which lets students  practice real device operation using AHA training scenarios.Identical graphical interface is used with audio and visual prompts which mimic the AED Plus in look and operation. Screen messages and audio voice prompts guide the user from all aspects of the sudden cardiac arrest. That includes the arrival on the scene, calling for help, administering CPR, and shock delivery. A hand held remote allows the instructor to choose from 8 preprogrammed AHA scenarios and a manual scenario function, plus an “Attach Pads”, “Low Battery”,and a “Call for Service” simulations. The Training unit is powered by 6 “C” cell batteries. These accessories would make you more comfortable in using a defibrillator in a real situation.
